The brief
CarGurus and Vagrants wanted a film that didn’t feel like an endorsement. “A Drive in the Life” follows Drake Maye and Ann Michael Maye around Charlotte, unscripted: high school, the neighborhoods, the 2015 GMC he still drives, the rides that marked a relationship that started when they were 12. A five-minute hero, plus the cutdowns, had to carry the “Big Deal” idea without stepping on the talk.
The sound
Jack LeMay had us moving all over the map, on purpose. Syrupy hip hop on the title. Country for the drives, because that’s what Drake actually puts on. Heavy metal for the tennis battle with Ann Michael at home. Then a sweet lofi track in the house, just warmth, for two people who have been together since they were kids. The score changes with the room. The story doesn't.
